A Little Less Mess

How can you make art time less messy?

Art time with kids is a wonderful way to encourage creativity and self-expression. However, it can also be a messy affair, leaving you with paint splatters and glitter scattered. But fear not! We have some fantastic tips to help you reduce the mess during kids art time, so you can focus on the fun and creativity without worrying about the cleanup.

1. Set up a dedicated art space

Designate a specific area in your home as the art zone. This could be a corner of the dining room, the laundry or a spare room. Having a dedicated space for art activities can contain the mess and make cleanup easier. If you have an undercover outdoor area that's even better!

2. Use easy-rinse and non-toxic materials

Opt for easy rinse paints (hello ATC!) and washable markers, and crayons. This way, if any spills or accidents happen, you can easily clean them up without leaving permanent stains. Also, choose non-toxic materials to ensure the safety of your little artists.

3. Use protective coverings

Before starting any art project, cover the table or floor with a tablecloth or large paper, such as newspapers. This will catch any spills or drips, making cleanup a breeze. Use smocks or old shirts to protect your child's clothing.

4. Organise art supplies

Keep art supplies somewhat organised and easily accessible. Use containers or caddies to store paints, brushes, and other materials. When everything has its place, it reduces the chances of accidental spills and makes cleanup more efficient.

5. Make set up & pack up, part of art time

Actively involve and teach your kids about how to set up and pack up. Getting them involved with things like cleaning brushes after use and putting caps back on markers from an early age can make life so much easier later on. Instilling these habits means you can minimise messes and prolong the life of art supplies. You can even go one step further and make it fun by playing music or turning it into a game.

6. Use alternative materials

Let's be honest, paint isn't an every day activity for most. For those days when you need them to be completely self-sufficient, get creative with materials that require less supervision. For example, you can try using coloured pencils, pastels, or stickers instead of paints and glue.

7. Plan outdoor art activities

Take advantage of good weather and plan art activities outdoors. This way, any messes can be easily washed away with a hose or wiped off with a cloth. Plus, being in nature can inspire even more creativity!

8. Embrace imperfections

Remember, art is all about creativity and self-expression. Embrace (some of) the mess and imperfections that come with it. Sometimes the most beautiful masterpieces are created in the midst of chaos. So, relax, have fun, and enjoy the art journey with your little ones!

By following these tips, you can create a more enjoyable art time for both you and the kids. So, let the creativity flow and worry less about the mess!
