Resist This - Beautiful Crayon & Watercolour

This is a ripper activity if the kids are a tad bored of the same old, same old. If it's time to add a little spark into creative time, the magic of crayon and water colour resist art is simply irresistible.

What is Crayon Water Colour Resist Art?

Before we jump into the how-to, let's quickly cover the basics. Crayon water colour resist art is a technique where you use crayons to draw a design on paper and then apply water colours over the top. The waxy crayon acts as a resist, repelling the water colours. It's like magic on paper!

Materials You'll Need

  • Crayons
  • Water colour paints
  • Paper (ideally thick water colour paper, just like our ATC art pad)
  • Paint brush
  • A cup of water for rinsing brushes
  • Paper towel or similar for blotting (optional)

Step-by-Step Guide

  • Get drawing: Use the crayons to create the first layer of art. Gently guide the kids to press down firmly to ensure the wax creates a good resist.

  • Add water colour: When the kids are happy with their crayon art, it's time to bring in the water colours. Start painting over the crayon drawing and watch as the water colours magically avoid the crayon areas.

  • Experiment with techniques: Encourage a little bit of experimentation! Blend colours together, or try a really dark water colour on a super light crayon for maximum affect.

    Tips and Tricks

Some ideas for those who need a gentle nudge:

    • White crayon looks increddddible: Want to create hidden messages or surprise elements in your artwork? Use a white crayon to draw them before applying the watercolors. They'll magically appear!
    • Play with different resist materials: While crayons are the classic choice, give other resist materials like oil pastels a go, for a slightly different result.

Hope you love this one as much as we do.

    xx
