Bougie Candle Holders - 6 / 20 DIY Gifts Under $20

Activity 6 of our '20 gifts Under $20' series!! 💰

Gift #6 – Bougie Candle Holders

With your All The Colours paints and some craft glue already on hand, you’ll need:

  1. Target Aus Candle Holders (pack of two) - $5.50
  2. Target Aus Candle Stick (pack of three) - $5.50
  3. Faux Gold Leaf (we used Born brand from Officeworks Aus) - $3.90

Total Spend - $14.90

Step 1

Ask your little one to think of the gift recipients' favourite colours, and let them loose with the paints! They can apply a coat to the entire piece, or create patterns and designs of their choosing. This example is done by my 3 year old, so we went for a 'more is more' style of paint!

Step 2

When the paint is dry, grab the PVA / craft glue and some cotton tips or your ATC paint brush. First, mix 80% water with 20% glue together, and apply a coat all over the candle holder to seal the paint. When this is completely dry, use the paint brush or cotton tips to apply glue anywhere they would like the gold to appear.

Step 3

You may like to cut the faux gold leaf into strips for easier application. When ready, press the faux gold leaf onto the glued areas. For anyone who has used real gold leaf in the past, this faux product is much more kid friendly and wont get stuck to fingers etc as easily. Do keep in mind though, you'll still want really clean hands to avoid leaf curling.

Step 4

When the glue is completely dry, using a spare paint brush, brush away the excess gold leaf. I found we had to be quite vigorous in this process as the faux product doesn't come away as easily as regular gold leaf.

And there you have it. Package it up with your candle sticks and watch as your loved one marvels at this gorgeously bling DIY gift!

Happy Creating!

xx
