Nature's Brushes

This activity is a great one to encourage explorational different patterns, textures and applications – simply by swapping your regular paint brushes for flowers, foliage or other items from the garden.

What you'll need:

  • Poster paint
  • Canvas board or paper
  • Palette (or paper plates)
  • Items from the garden

Step 1: Get Walking

Start by going for a walk around your yard, street or local park and ask your youngster to select a number of different plant ‘brushes’. You can have a bit of fun with this!

Step 2: Get Set

Next, set up your space with a drop cloth or table cover (or better yet, do it outside).

Step 3: Mix & Match

Ask your little one to pick one colour per ‘nature brush’. This will help them see what patterns and shapes each item creates.

Step 4: It's Pattern Time!

Now you’re all set, it’s time to let them go wild trying out the different items. If they need a little assistance, you can encourage them by suggesting different applications like dabbing, wiping or pressing the items onto the canvas or paper to create different patterns.
